Fourth Warsaw International Seminar on Soft Computing WISSC-4'04
Warsaw, October 25, 2004

http://www.ibspan.waw.pl/wissc2004/wissc04.htm

First of all, we wish to thank all the participants of the Warsaw
International Seminars on Soft Computing, WISSC-1'03 - WISSC-3'03, that
were held in 2003 at the Systems Research Institute of the Polish Academy
of Sciences. This series of seminars was a great success and it was
generally agreed upon that the organization of next seminars of this kind
is very useful and beneficial to the scientific community. We have also
received many letters of support and interest from those who have not been
able to be with us.

That is why, as we have mentioned before, the next seminar, i.e. the Fourth
Warsaw International Seminar on Soft Computing, WISSC-4'04, will be held on
October 25, 2004 in Warsaw (Poland) at the same location of Systems
Research Institute.
This Seminar is organized in memory of Professor Stefan Chanas on the
second anniversary of his death (he died on 4th November 2002). That is why
the Seminar is organized jointly by the Systems Research Institute and the
Wroclaw University of Technology.

Professor Didier Dubois (France) is one of the prominent scientists in the
field who has already confirmed his participation in the Fourth Seminar. We
expect many other leading experts to confirm their participation shortly.
We think that it is also a great opportunity to organize a meeting of the
whole Polish soft computing community.

This Seminar, as previous seminars in the series, will be focused on:
foundational and applicational issues of broadly perceived soft computing,
including but not limited to, fuzzy sets, rough sets, evolutionary
computations, neural networks, probabilistic reasoning, etc., and
applications in the areas exemplified by: operation research, decision
making and support, control, data analysis, data mining, signal processing,
management, financial engineering, etc.

The formula of the seminar is the same, i.e. a one day seminar starting at
ca. 10:30 and finishing at ca.18 with a symbolic registration fee of 80 PLN
with a book publication (the accepted papers - after peer reviews - will be
published in a special post conference volume by EXIT Publishing House,
Warsaw). The Seminar will consist of plenary talks by leading experts in
the fields, and of shorter technical contributions. From a feedback
received by us after previous seminars this inexpensive in terms of costs
ant time is very welcome by the community. Moreover, it was generally
expressed that such seminars may be very valuable for younger researchers
as a unique opportunity to meet both prominent scientists and their
colleagues from other universities and research institutes.

In the relation to the above, we plan for WISSC-4'04 an extended program
for younger scientists in the sense that, in addition to general plenary
lectures and technical sessions there will be special sessions on selected
topics in which interested people may have an opportunity for deeper
discussions and exchange of ideas. Therefore, this invitation is not only a
personal invitation to the person (most probably a senior researcher) but
also an invitation for him or her to come with younger collaborators. We
are deeply convinced that this will not only be beneficial to all the
participants but will also integrate soft computing community in Poland.
