Curriculum vitae

Schreiber is an associate professor of knowledge engineering at the department of Social Science Informatics of the University of Amsterdam. His research interests lie mainly in the area of knowledge engineering and knowledge-system development. Recently he has also worked on knowledge modelling for the "semantic web". He published more than 80 papers in theses areas. In 2000 he published with MIT Press a textbook on knowledge engineering and knowledge management, based on the CommonKADS methodology.

Schreiber studied medicine at the University of Utrecht (The Netherlands) and graduated in 1983. After a one-year post-graduate course in computer science, he worked from 1984 to 1986 at the Department of Medical Informatics of the University of Leiden on the development of medical decision-support tools. In 1986 he joined the group of Bob Wielinga at the University of Amsterdam. In 1992 he was awarded a PhD on a thesis entitled "Pragmatics of the Knowledge Level". He has been involved in numerous ESPRIT projects in the knowledge-engineering area, such as KADS & KADS-II (both on methodologies for knowledge-system development), REFLECT (reflective reasoning), GAMES (medical knowledge systems) and KACTUS (technical ontologies). He is currently involved in the Dutch ICES project MIA (Multimedia Information Amalysis) and in the IST project IBROW (Intelligent Brokering on the Web).

He is currently c0-chair of W3C's Web Ontology Working Group. He is co-editor of the Semantic Web area of Electronic Transactions on Artificial Intelligence. He is also associate editor of Knowledge and Informatioin Systems. In 1988 he was co-organizer of the first Dutch AI Conference (NAIC'88) and is now co-orgnizer of BNAIC'01. He was also co-chair of the European Knowledge Acquisition Workshops EKAW-90 in Amsterdam, EKAW-94 in Hoegaarden, and EKAW-96 in Nottingham. From 1994 to 1996 he was coordinator of the Sisyphus-VT study. The goal of this study was to compare knowledge modelling approaches by applying these to the same data set.
