Model Driven Knowledge Acquisition

In this article we present the KADS Conceptual Modelling Language. KADS is a methodology for developing expert systems.. We focus here on a major knowledge acquisition tool in KADS: a modelling language which can be used as an intermediary representation between data on expertise and the design/implementation of an expert system. This modelling language is presented after a discussion of what the potential problems are in knowledge acquisition, and what kind of tools have been developed to meet these problems. Finally a short overview is given of experiences with this tool, and in particular, the use of interpretation models. Interpretation models are highly abstracted descriptions of typical problem solving tasks, which can be used as starting points in the analysis of data on expertise.
